The Touhou Project

The Touhou Project (東方Project), also 東方プロジェクト (Touhou Purojekuto) or Project Shrine Maiden, is a Japanese doujin game series that specialises in shoot 'em ups by sole Team Shanghai Alice member ZUN. Generally, it's a series of 2D (with 3D background) vertically-scrolling danmaku shooting games, that also creates related print works and music CDs. There are also seven spinoffs co-produced with Twilight Frontier, called "danmaku action games." Or rather in my words, Touhou is a shoot 'em up bullet hell franchise that's been around since 96'! [TECHNICALLY 95' because that's when development started.] It began with Touhou Reiiden Highly Responsive to prayer released in 1996 for the PC-98. With Reimu Hakurei as the protagonist, she uses a Yin-Yang like ball to hit targets! A few other games were released by ZUN for the PC-98 before getting a new coat of shiny paint when Windows came out after the few years Touhou game hiatus of the creator. This new game was Touhou: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil which released in full in August of 2002.

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil follows the story of Reimu Hakurei the shrine maiden yet again along with Marisa Kirisame, a curious magician through their quest to solve various incidents and exterminate Youkai in the land of Gensokyo- A haunted area of Japan blocked off from the rest of the world. Humans and Youkai coexist here, as well as other creatures such as vampires and fairies and spirits and moon rabbits and the likes. Sealed off from the rest off the world by the Great Hakurei Barrier (which Reimu herself manages), the traditions and culture of Gensokyo evolved in isolation in the cradle of a mountain range. Suddenly, an unusual red mist swaths the land of Gensokyo. As the shrine maiden, Reimu believes it is her duty to investigate the strange mist and assure everything is at peace along with Marisa Kirisama, another girl in the area wants to tag along in hopes the source of the mist will bring her something valuable. As the two girls explore & face other girls- Their travels lead them to the elusive Scarlet mansion owned by the titular Scarlet sisters...

WHAT GOT ME INTO TOUHOU

I myself have never actually played any of the games- But I really want to! By virtue of growing up online I watched a hundred Night of Nights remixes and Chirumiru/Bonkimiru edits, but never really knew the source. Only until around 2021 I gained a true interest in Touhou whenever one of my friends began to talk about it all the time! I love video games with music as a major aspect as well as media with primarily girls. I mostly interact with Touhou through the music or fan content.. MY FAVORITES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first Touhou fan experience.. CONVICTER YAMAXANDU!!!!!!! I love ISOYS music. This video made my love for Shiki Eiki ignite as my favorite Touhou character! As much as the song mischaracterizes Eiki, I love this song sooo much. Absolutely obsessed with the chorus. So nostalgic for this style...

The most classic Touhou fansong... CHIRUMIRU!!!!!! It's not my favorite but whenever I listen I get transported to 2014. I love Cirno's faces in this & I love the Scout Bonkumiru parody. I love the random TF2 Touhou connection I myself have zero idea why the fandoms have such heavy overlap but It's awesome. Forever a Cirno fan and who doesn't love Cirno. Her & Reimu have the most amazing ZUN artworks to me especially his older artwork which lacks proper porportion & has airbrush shading.

I can't understand Japanese so I have no idea what's going on but this song is so good. I love Yukmao & Chen forever all of the Touhou youkai always have the best designs. It's just good. Also Yakumo is a foxgirl which makes the song 50% better.

I use "favorite" alot but... Favorite Touhou fansong. WARNINGXWARNINGXWARNING perfectly encaptures Clownpiece's battle difficulty & The visuals are so unique and lovely as are the vocals. I will forever be obsessed with this vocalist's singing until the end of time. Her voice is so fresh and I love the way she slows down or speeds up singing or pronounces words with a slight vocal waver. I'd love to sound like this for real... The background sounds are also so so peppy!

I discovered this when I was creating the video section of this page after fighting for hours of my life trying to get the videos to work on this site because Firefox kept blocking the files/vids & listening to this made me discover the issue. Same words for this previous song I love denpa and house the hard beat is addicting. I initially found Cirno's voice annoying in this song but I understand now. I love Tomboyish Freezing Bath so much.
