• The House of Leaves is an ergoderic literature 1 by Mark Z. Danielewski, and is followed by its anthology piece, The Whalestoe Letters. The book can be described as a monographic 2 horror novel and is most known for its descriptive prose and incredibly difficult formatting conventions while following an academic format. Numerous pages will be flipped upside down, writen in non-English languages such as German or French, have singular letters or phrases on them, cascade downwards, hide in corners, or swarm the page- Among other conventions such as having every instance of house (including in other languages, such as haus and maison ) highlighted in blue, or sections striken through in red. To differenciate the different narrative voices throughout the novel different fonts are used to easily tell them apart, such as the Navidson Record being written in Times New Roman, the footnotes left from Johnny Truant being written in Courier , the footnotes left by The Editors being written in Bookman and the ending letters being written in Dante, In addition to the footnotes being sorted away from the Navidson Record using a linebreak. However, as mentioned before with the way the format can veer into the enigmatic and overwhelming side, the footnotes left by Truant can interrupt parts of the Navidson record or completely engulf them. Reference notes to explain meanings, translations, or provides sources are often left by Truant and the Editors.
